Forest Stewardship at Ravensdale Retreat Natural Area

Starting mid-July, King County Parks plans to selectively thin 75 acres in the Ravensdale Retreat Natural Area. Periodic thinning of previously logged land lets more sunlight reach the forest floor to grow a diverse understory and allows remaining trees grow bigger. 

The natural area will be closed to the public during this work for an anticipated five weeks.

Later this winter when the weather is cool and wet, we will plant 800 seedlings in the newly thinned area. The seedlings will diversify the age and species mix in the forest, helping the ecosystem be more resilient to threats like climate change.
