instruments, a spinner bowl and tile safety surfacing. Go check it out

Two VMI shoreline projects benefit shoreline habitat and
fish
This month, King County will complete a project on
Vashon-Maury Island that restores the natural shoreline environment and improve
habitat critical for forage fish and juvenile chinook salmon. To do this,
approximately 700 linear feet of shoreline bulkheads and eight residential
structures will be removed. After the work wraps up, the shoreline will be
replanted with trees and shrubs this winter. To learn more about this project

King County recently completed another Vashon-Maury Island project that improves estuary habitat for salmonids at Judd Creek. The work included adding 25 pieces of large wood along 300 feet of the creek and converting a neighboring landscaping pond to a riparian wetland that will fill during high tides and allow the stream to migrate. Planting the area will take place this winter.
Island Center Forest
King County is planning to improve the health of Island Center Forest by selectively thinning mature over crowded Douglas-fir trees from a 10-acre portion of Vashon Island’s largest public forestland. King County Parks has scheduled a public presentation about the proposed forest-management action at the next Friends of Island Center Forest meeting, 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the Vashon Land Trust building, 10014 SW Bank Rd.

Road construction updates
Many scheduled road improvements
will take place over the next few months, some are listed below, and details on
all King County road construction projects can be found on the Road Services Division website.
Glendale area repair preparation
On Wednesday, Sept. 12, soil boring
will take place and groundwater samples will be gathered on South 96th Street
at 8th Avenue South near the Glendale area. The purpose of the work is to
prepare for a South 96th Street sinkhole and drainage repair project. The work
requires an intermittent lane restriction. Motorists will be directed through
the work zone from about 10 a.m. to noon. For detailed location information,

Upcoming closure near North Bend
Later this month, box culvert
installation is expected to begin on 428th Avenue Southeast between Southeast Reinig Road and
Southeast 92nd Street near the City of North Bend. The work is expected to last six

 September is National Preparedness Month – a reminder to take action to prepare, now and throughout the year, for the types of emergencies that could affect us where we live, work, and play. It’s important to have a family and workplace communications plan and evacuation route established. You are also urged to store food, water, first aid, and other essential survival supplies in your home and vehicle. Additionally, take time to learn lifesaving skills – such as CPR and first aid – and how and when to shut of water and gas lines to your home or business. Finally, check your insurance policies and coverage for the hazards you may face (such as flood, earthquakes or freezing temperatures). When disaster strikes, first responders may not be able to reach you. That’s why it’s critical you prepare in advance and build relationships with your neighbors so you can support each other until help arrives. Washington State University Extension forestry is holding a
workshop on red alder management Saturday, Sept. 29 in Kent. Participants
will learn about alder ecology and silviculture as well as how to harvest and

John Henry Coal Mine reopening
The Greater Maple Valley
Unincorporated Area Council (GMVUAC) convened a Special Event on Aug.
6 to discuss the reopening of the John Henry surface coal mine outside

Community Councils comment on proposed King County Comprehensive Plan
On Aug. 14 the Rural Area
Unincorporated Area Councils (UACs) and Associations met with King County
Comprehensive Plan (KCCP) Manager Ivan Miller to discuss both the Executive and
Council proposed changes to the KCCP major update cycles and Subarea Planning
schedule.. The Rural Area UACs and Associations submitted comments to the
County Council’s Planning, Rural Services, and Environment Committee for
