Newborn Safety Bill signed into state law with help from King County Councilmembers Reagan Dunn and Jeanne Kohl-Welles.

March 22, 2018, four years after an infant named Baby Kimball was found dead less than a half a mile from a hospital, Governor Jay Inslee signed a bill into law that will work to better inform advocacy around newborn abandonment.
In Washington state, parents can leave newborns with qualified individuals at hospitals, fire stations or federally designated rural health clinics. The Safety of Newborn Children Law allows parents to do this anonymously up to 72 hours after the birth of a child without fear of prosecution for abandonment.
Now thanks to bill sponsors, Senators Guy Palumbo, Joe Fain, Sharon Nelson, and support from my colleague Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles, our successful lobbying efforts over the last two legislative sessions mean future prevention efforts are better informed and hopefully more effective.
We want to spread the word about these protections under the law and hopefully prevent future tragedies in our region. To learn more about Washington's safe haven laws click here.

Since King County serves as the local government for residents that live outside of cities I want to make sure their voices are heard.
