This is a special duty opportunity available for eligible King County employees. The Solid Waste Division of King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks is looking for an Assistant Accountant in their Enterprise Services Section. The Assistant Accountant works in the General Accounting Unit of the Enterprise Services Section in the Solid Waste Division. The responsibilities of the person in this position will include coordinating the Solid Waste Division fixed asset accounting, reviewing and creating interagency and inter-fund transfers, maintaining Oracle EBS coding structure, preparing financial reports for management and staff use, and other accounting support functions as assigned.

About Solid Waste Division: A division within King County's Department of Natural Resources & Parks, the award winning and innovative Solid Waste Division (SWD) has been recognized for operational excellence. The division's line of business is comprised of waste prevention, resource recovery, and waste disposal. This robust and dynamic enterprise funded division has an annual budget exceeding $100 million. More than 400 employees create value for customers across ten active locations (eight recycling and transfer facilities). Resources are harvested on-site and refuse is transported by SWD to the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill in Maple Valley, Washington. Through a public/private partnership, landfill gas is captured and converted to clean natural gas. In 2015, SWD and the partnership proudly produced enough pipeline quality fuel to heat 19,000 homes in King County.
Enterprise Services Section profile: Enterprise Services section staff provides a variety of financial management, project management and support services for the Solid Waste Division which include accounts payable, accounts receivable, contract management, procurement, development and monitoring of operating and capital budget, internal audit, capital project management and customer service.
The Accounting Services team is composed of two work units: Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable/General Ledger. Accounts Receivable is responsible for the receipt, recording, and reconciliation of the division's revenue from grants and customers at the division's two drop boxes, eight transfer stations, and one active landfill. Revenues include cash, check, credit/debit cards, and an in-house revolving account program.

Examples Of Job Duties:
- Complete accounting responsibility for Solid Waste Division fixed assets and controllable items, which includes payment, tracking, reconciliation of the general ledger to the Fixed Asset System, researching variances, making corrections, and supporting capitalization of capital repairs, land and built assets.
- Coordinate the annual physical inventory of assets which includes planning, instructing staff, reviewing count sheets, and processing paperwork for corrections.
- Writing and revising fixed asset procedures, advising Division staff on fixed asset policies and procedures, and working with other County staff on fixed asset accounting issues.
- Review charges from other departments, processing interagency and inter-fund charges, accounting transfers, smart spreadsheets and corrections.
- Maintain the Division Oracle EBS coding structure by establishing, closing and documenting new projects, tasks and awards.
- Coordinate year-end expenditure accruals for the Division, make adjustments, and reconcile to actual accruals in the following year.
- Prepare periodic and ad hoc financial reports, providing accounting support for reconciliations and other accounting unit tasks as required.
Our Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- Extensive knowledge of Accounting or Finance and extensive experience in fixed asset accounting or other areas of finance
- Demonstrated skills in conducting reconciliations
- Demonstrated skills in research, analysis and solving problems
- Demonstrated skills in using Microsoft Excel to develop and maintain complex spreadsheets
- Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others in stressful situations
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize workload and carry out assignments independently
- Skill in analyzing and interpreting financial data and preparing financial reports.
Most Competitive Candidate Will Also Have :
- Associates or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration
- Experience in public sector accounting.
- Experience with Oracle EBS financial system
