Statement on the passing of Governor Mike Lowry

Lowry

Former Washington State Governor Mike Lowry passed away on Monday, May 1. In addition to spending 21 years in elective offices in Washington -- 1976 to 1978 in the King County Council, 1979 to 1989 representing the 7th District in Congress, and 1993 to 1997 as governor, Governor Lowry served as a member of the formerly Committee to End Homelessness’ HomGoverning Board for many years and as a member of the National Alliance to End Homelessness Board until this year. He was a true and unwavering champion for the most vulnerable members of our community. Governor Lowry will be dearly missed. We need more men and women like him today.

Washington State Homeless Students

Schoolhouse Washington

One in every 27 K-12 students in our state is homeless and about half are Grade 5 or younger. School districts across the state of Washington identified 39,671 K-12 students as having experienced homelessness during the 2015-16 academic year, an 11.7 percent increase over the previous year and more than double the number from just eight years ago. Schoolhouse Washington has analyzed this data, which is collected by individual school districts, gathered by the state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, and reported to the public. The analysis provides a snapshot of student homelessness in K-12 schools, the demographics of students experiencing homelessness, and how they are faring academically.

Infographics produced by Schoolhouse Washington in partnership with Seattle University’s Project on Family Homelessness are available to use and share here.
