Councilmember Dunn works with colleagues to update local dam evacuation plans
|
|
By now, I know many of you will have heard of the events in Oroville, CA, where threats of dam failure caused a region with a population the size of Tacoma to evacuate, resulting in clogged evacuation routes and other issues. As Chair of the King County Flood Control District, I know the value of having a well thought out evacuation plan in place and believe there is more we can and should do to prepare our region. Given what's happened at the Oroville Dame and the evacuation in San Jose, I feel this is prudent course to follow.
Recently with Councilmember Dave Upthegrove, Vice Chair of the King County Flood Control District and I held a press conference announcing plans
to introduce legislation that reviews and assesses gaps in existing emergency action plans associated
with dams in King County. We know we can always be more prepared, and there is always more we can do to keep the public safe.
What we’re proposing is a proactive measure to assess and learn from what is one of the largest evacuations in the history of the United States. Our legislation would direct the County Executive to review and assess the gaps in the existing plans for emergency evacuation and response, and recommend changes to repair those gaps.
The four major dams in King County protect our lives, our drinking water, and one-eighth of our state’s economy. By ensuring that we are prepared for potential problems in the future, we can protect our residents and our property.
