How to keep your home, business, or property safe from flooding and other extreme weather.

This week I had the opportunity to participate in a winter storm rescue demonstration with the King County Sheriff's Air Support and Marine Rescue Dive Units. For those living in flood prone areas it's important to know and prepare for extreme weather.
The King County Flood Control District, which I serve as Chair of, provides funding for a variety of flood warnings, alerts, and resources for major river systems such as the Cedar and Green. Automated alerts about river levels are available in voice calls, text, or email and free sandbags are available in a number of locations across the county. I also would encourage those with smart phones or tablets to download the free King County Flood Warning app, which provides real-time flooding info on your phone or mobile device.
2017 Community Engagement Grant Application Available
I would encourage unincorporated residents interested in bringing together their local community to apply for a Community Engagement Grant.
This grant offers a total of $60,000 in funds for projects in 2017. Previous grant awardees have received funds for a variety of projects including neighborhood night outs, outreach, education, and even signage for communities looking for more visibility in the event of emergencies. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, November 18, 2016.
