Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness month

Happy Friday, Kent!

I wanted to kick off this week's newsletter with a reminder that is close to my heart. In 2016, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

It was supposed to be a happy day I wouldn't forget, because it was the day I announced I wanted to be the next mayor of Kent.

Instead, it became a day of fear, panic and unknowns. But after a tough fight, I was able to beat the cancer because of the help, research and developments made by organizations like the American Cancer Society.

I'm forever grateful for the individuals and organizations standing up and dedicating time and resources to find a cure to cancer and expand treatment options.

So, this October as we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, please get your mammogram and remind those you love to schedule their appointment.

Don't procrastinate on this, and don't let your friends or family push it off. It's that important. My mother was the one who reminded me, and she truly saved my life.

On a lighter note, we have some great events coming up the next few weeks, so I hope you enjoy the update and have a great weekend!

Dana Ralph, Kent Mayor

carlos

At Tuesday night's Kent City Council meeting, I presented Carlos Moreno, on-air personality at La Gran D radio the proclamation for Hispanic Heritage Month.

This month celebrates and honors the cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.

Also at Tuesday night's Kent City Council meeting, I welcomed Garrison Glenn, Hillshire Terrace and Nature Trails townhomes to the Kent registered neighborhood program.

groundbreaking

On Tuesday afternoon, I joined Deputy CEO of Sound Transit Terri Mestas, Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus, Council President Kaur and Councilmembers Troutner, Michaud, Boyd and Fincher for the Sound Transit parking garage groundbreaking at Kent Station.

The $62.5 million dollar garage will be located at East James Street and Railroad Avenue North, and it is expected to open in early 2027. This project will add over 400 new parking stalls to improve access for drivers, bus riders, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

powerlight

It was great to meet with PowerLight COO Bob Zak and other regional leaders to discuss the future of the air and space manufacturing industry in the Kent Valley.

Always a pleasure to better understand the challenges and opportunities that businesses are facing and how we can facilitate and empower our industries and workforce to thrive.

Coffee and Conversation is one of my favorite ways to connect. Thank you to all who joined me Wednesday afternoon at Cutters Point Coffee.

We talked about a variety of things including public safety and police staffing, investments in infrastructure like crosswalks and outcomes of the recent legislative session.

Employee of the Month

employee of the month october

Mark Maughan is our September Employee of the Month!

Mark was hired in 2004 and promoted into his current position as a Meter Reader III in 2016. As a Meter Reader, Mark performs accurate water meter readings, maintains meter records, and repairs and replaces defective meters.

Mark was nominated because he has the perfect balance of efficiency and customer service. Despite working a busy route with limited time, he will always take the extra few moments to connect with each customer he encounters.

Not all interactions Mark has with customers are under positive circumstances. His natural calm, caring, and good-mannered demeaner defuses a lot of these difficult situations and turns them into positive encounters.

He also understands that the interaction he has with a customer might be the only interaction that person has with a Kent employee. Because of this, Mark goes above and beyond to make sure all his interactions are positive.

Mark connects and cares for his co-workers. When Mark completes his own assignments, he makes sure every other member of his team has what they need and offers his help. He has a strong sense of integrity and a powerful work ethic.

Mark continuously embraces our values, and we celebrate him as September’s Employee of the Month.

Thank you and congratulations, Mark!

king county

King County, and counties across the country, are facing behavioral health challenges including growing need for mental health and substance use care, a workforce shortage, and an overdose crisis, impacting residents all across the county, especially children and youth.

King County recently released a new online survey to learn how the behavioral health system can better serve communities. Learn more and take the survey here.

King County is also hosting in-person listening sessions all across King County. What community members share at these listening sessions will help King County to prioritize how we invest in a system for mental health and substance use care that serves our communities.

Light snacks will be served, and gift cards will be provided as compensation to those who attend. Spanish and ASL interpretation will be available.

See dates and locations for the listening sessions, sign up and more here.
