Last weekend, we cut the ribbon on phase two renovations at Morrill Meadows Park.
There's new, accessible play equipment, a nature play area, permanent stage and large play field.
Councilmember Troutner, Councilmember Michaud, Senator Kauffman, Council President Kaur, Parks Commissioners Duggan and Veele and Deputy Director Levenhagen helped cut the ribbon.
Our Parks Planning Team and Operations Crew have done a phenomenal job at this park. Highly recommend checking it out!

Mom and I had a wonderful time at the Mela Maavan Dhyan da 2024 at accesso Showare Center on Sunday. It's beautiful celebration of moms and daughters - amazing dance and entertainment.

At Tuesday night's Kent City Council meeting, we proclaimed the month of July as Parks and Recreation Month.
Kent Parks, Recreation & Community Services programs are vitally important to establishing and maintaining the quality of life in Kent, ensuring the health of all residents, and contributing to the economic and environmental well-being of a community and region.
Council President Kaur presented the proclamation to Parks Director Julie Parascondola.

Kent City Council
Here's the recap on what the Kent City Council has been working on! It was a busy week with lots of important items to attend to.

As a reminder, the council has switched back to the Committee of the Whole format, so business that was previously discussed at meetings throughout the week is back to being before our regularly scheduled Workshop and council meetings
Employee of the Month
Congratulations to Kristi Stewart, our June Employee of the Month!
Kristi started working for the Kent Municipal Court in 2001 as a Judicial Specialist, and today servers as a lead.
She assists with planning, organizing, and coordinating administrative functions of the Kent Municipal Court.
She provides training on all elements of Court Clerk related duties and ensures proper collection, receipting, and accounting of revenue and expenditures from court activities.
Kristi grew up in Monroe, Washington and graduated from Sultan High School. She then attended Edmonds Community College for 2 years earning her AA.
As a teenager Kristi began working summers as a file clerk with her mom. She also worked for Everett Municipal Court for 2 years before moving south.
Kristi loves working for the City of Kent and the Kent Municipal Court. Kristi says our court has an amazing camaraderie and she considers each one of her coworkers her extended family.
Kristi was nominated because her strengths include her exceptional positive attitude and her customer service focus. She takes great pride in providing excellent customer service to all court contacts.
She truly cares about the people she serves and shows genuine empathy. She is very hard working and always willing to help others. Her vast knowledge of the court system allows her to complete any task and fill in wherever needed.
She is an amazing leader and team player. She is an outstanding trainer, she is very thorough, explains the entire process clearly and can answer any question that may arise. Kristi is a wealth of information and shares her knowledge with everyone.
She thrives on building people up and helping them do their best. She is knowledgeable, professional, pleasant, positive, and outright great person, Kent is lucky to have her!
From snowmobiling and jeeping in the winter to Harley rides and hanging out in the river in the summer to traveling to new places, Kristi says there is never a dull moment with her family! Congratulations, Kristi!

National Night Out is August 6!
National Night Out elevates the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Most importantly, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

Operation Dry Water is a year-round boating under the influence and enforcement campaign. This three-day national enforcement campaign focuses on boating under the influence and is held near the Fourth of July holiday.
Officers in waterways across the state will be on heightened enforcement to remove impaired boaters.
Every year, alcohol use is the leading contributing factor in boater deaths in our state and across the nation. Follow the rules, take it seriously and live to enjoy more days on the water. Learn more here!

The WSU Extension Master Gardener volunteers are local and university-trained. They are providing free research-based information to home gardeners in King County.

Our friends at the Greater Kent Historical Society are excited to present Experience Historical Kent this August!
Join them at the Kent Historical Museum August 9-10 to explore the many parts of Kent's history. On Friday, August 9, participate in a historic tour, then pop by Kherson Park for a screening of The Boys in the Boat under the stars! Living Well Kent and the Kent Lions Club have partnered to bring their Farmers Market downtown! This is a community driven market, increasing access to fresh, healthy, and culturally relevant produce to our community.

Free Summer Programs
Our Parks team kicked off their free summer programs this week!
Both programs run Monday- Friday now through August 9 (no programs on July 4) at various locations throughout the city.
The Summer Playgrounds program is a great way for you and your child to enjoy some free fun at local parks in our community. Plus, Kent School District Food Services provides a free lunch every day for school-aged students.
Lunch is served from 12pm - 12:30pm. Program runs from 11:30am-3:30pm at Chestnut Ridge Park, West Fenwick Park, and Morrill Meadows Park. Stop by for games, sports, arts & crafts, water games, and more!
HERO stands for Health, Experience, Recreation, Outreach. This mobile health and nutrition program stops by numerous locations throughout the city, including parks, apartments, and enrich the experience of our campers in the Camp Walkapala program. HERO offers weekly activities, games, special treats, and more.

New Lake Meridian Park boat launch fees went into effect on Thursday. The cost of a daily launch pass is now $8.
To purchase a daily launch pass, use the QR code onsite to open the ticketing website and purchase your daily pass, or visit MyKentParks.com/BoatLaunch.
Interested in an annual boat launch pass? Purchase one from the Kent Commons Community Center! Call 253-856-5100 with questions about annual passes.
Due to the new digital payment system for daily launch passes, physical receipts no longer need to be displayed on the vehicle that launched the vessel (effective Ju). Please note that violations are subject to enforcement under Kent City Codes 4.60.200(A)(9) and 4.06.310.

Parks & Recreation Commission
In case you missed it, we’re looking for City of Kent Parks and Recreation Commissioners!
Beginning this month, changes are being implemented to the operation of the Parks Commission to ensure that our commissioners are engaged and enjoy serving their term with us.
Moving forward, during each year of their term, Commissioners will be required to join us for an annual Parks tour, attend quarterly meetings to provide critical feedback and insight on our parks and recreation system, and immerse themselves in the Parks department at volunteerism activities.

Registration is now open for our Youth Fall Soccer program!
Sign your child up to learn the game, hone their skills, make friends, and have FUN! Program is open to all students in Pre-K to Grade 8. Pre-K participants must be 3 years of age by August 31, 2024. Teams are formed by grade. Deadline to register is August 6!

Conservation Event
 Join the Kent Parks team on Saturday, July 20 as we celebrate Conservation Day at Morrill Meadows Park!
Conservation Day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of preserving and protecting our natural resources and ecosystem.
At this event, we'll be removing invasive plants to care for recent plantings of native trees and shrubs! Register to join us and give back to our community through hands-on conservation as a Green Kent volunteer.
