Happy Friday Kent,
I wanted to kick off this week's newsletter with a reminder that's close to my heart. In 2016, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
It was supposed to be a happy day I wouldn't forget, because it was the day I announced I wanted to be the next mayor of Kent.
Instead, it became a day of fear, panic and unknowns. But after a tough fight, I was able to beat the cancer because of the help, research and developments made by organizations like the American Cancer Society.
I'm forever grateful for the individuals and organizations standing up and dedicating time and resources to find a cure to cancer and expand treatment options.
So this October as we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, please get your mammogram and remind those you love to schedule their appointment.
Don't procrastinate on this, and don't let your friends or family push it off. It's that important. My mother was the one who reminded me, and she truly saved my life.
On a lighter note, we have some great events coming up this weekend and next, so I hope you enjoy the update and have a great weekend!
Dana Ralph, Kent Mayor

Wednesday was special day at Riverbend Golf Complex!
For the first time ever, we welcomed Cross Country athletes from Kent School District high schools to the 18-hole course for a one-of-a-kind track meet. It was a blast and we can’t wait to do it again.

Tuesday was Lead Your Community Day for Discover U Week at KM! It's a week of events to inspire students to think about what's after high school.
I love hearing from our kids and learning about what their plans are for the future. I think they're always a little surprised when I tell them I'm a KM grad and didn't know I wanted to be the mayor when I was in high school.

We had another fantastic Drinks in the Driveway event on Monday at the Copper Ridge at Chestnut neighborhood.
I was joined by Chief Padilla and our Transportation Engineering Manager Rob Brown. It was great to see King County Sheriff Patti Cole-Tindell there too.

Fall Recycling Event
Have items to be recycled? Come on out to our Fall Residential Recycling event this weekend! For a full list of accepted items, visit our website.
📅 Saturday, October 15 ⏰ 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. 📍 Hogan Park, 24400 Russell Road
Each year the City of Kent hosts several free recycling collection events that allow residents to dispose of recyclable items not typically accepted at the curb.
Instead of going to the landfill as trash, all collected items will be reused or recycled!
Orca Recovery Day
Help our orca population by volunteering with us and our conservation partner, Green River Coalition, as we work to restore the river habitat along the Green River!
📅 Saturday, October 15 ⌚ 10 a.m. 📍 Riverview Park
Volunteers will be removing invasive species and planting native trees and shrubs to help improve conditions for salmon, which are a vital food source for orcas.
The planting helps restore spawning habitat for Chinook salmon which make up more than 80% of the diet for endangered Southern Resident Orcas in Puget Sound.
All ages are welcome and tools will be provided. You can learn more and register at the Green River Coalition's website.
