Recognitions & Proclamations

Proclamation

At Tuesday evening's Kent City Council meeting, the council confirmed several appointments to local boards and commissions and congratulated our Employee of the Year Janene Johnstone, and Employee of the Month for March, Michael Mage!

I also had the opportunity to proclaim April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

This observance calls attention to the impact of sexual violence in communities across our state and nation, raising public awareness and helps educate communities on how to prevent it.

Working together as a community, we can alleviate the trauma of sexual violence by ensuring supportive resources are available to all survivors, while standing up to and actively disrupting harmful attitudes and behaviors that contribute to sexual violence.

I also proclaimed April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

In 2019, distracted driving claimed over 3,000 lives nationally and over 286,000 people were injured in distracted driving accidents.

Spring is a time when people begin to log more miles on the road and it is imperative to focus attention on motor vehicle injury risks and preventions, so please drive safe and be attentive to the road and your surroundings!

Small Business Ribbon Cutting

Mia&More

Earlier today I had the opportunity to drop by Mia & More at the Great Wall Shopping Mall for their ribbon cutting and grand opening!

It's a new family-owned business here in Kent which I am always excited about! It was so interesting to hear from the family about their sugar cane farm in Vietnam and their new restaurant.

The food is excellent and I even got to try pressing sugar cane into juice! Check out Mia & More if you're ever near the Great Wall.

KDP Cajun Food & Music Fest

KDP Cajun Food & Music Fest

The Kent Downtown Partnership is looking for artists and vendors to participate in their 2022 Cajun Food & Music Fest!

This is an exciting new community event open to all ages, inspired by one of Kent’s small businesses: Altha’s Louisiana Cajun Spices shop.

Cajun Food and Music Fest will be at downtown Kent’s Burlington Green Park on Saturday, August 20 from 3 - 8 p.m. Railroad Avenue will be closed for a pedestrian marketplace, beer garden, music stage, kids activities and artists/vendors.

The Kent Downtown Partnership is accepting applications for artists and vendors, and are looking for a variety of vendors with a variety of price points, mediums and focuses.
