Hello.
This week we celebrated National Welcoming Week. I had the pleasure of attending Journey to Peace, a community celebration, to recognize the week. There was a delicious meal prepared by Project Feast, followed by storytelling and music. I also got the chance to meet and connect with residents from different cultures and backgrounds. If you haven’t attended this annual event, I encourage you to go next year. It is a great opportunity to learn and share.
Have a great weekend!

Thursday was an exciting milestone for Kent Parks. We had a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the new and improved Morrill Meadows Park. We also celebrated the amazing partnership between the City of Kent and the YMCA of Greater Seattle. Together the project offers an incredible indoor/outdoor recreation experience for all, and will bring together people from different communities, cultures and generations.
Here are the some of the improvements our community will enjoy:
- An expanded five-acre park
- A new multi-sport court for basketball, tennis, pickleball and soccer
- Walking paths for outdoor fitness and recreation
- Open play spaces for kids and grandkids to enjoy
- Gathering spaces for picnics, small community events and barbecues
- An enhanced off-leash dog park
- Community plaza on the front of the YMCA, featuring an outdoor fireplace and games like Ping Pong, Foosball and shuffleboard
As a lifelong resident of Kent, I am excited to see this project come together after years of hard work and planning. It required a commitment of time, energy and money by many, and I am grateful to everyone who contributed to the project in some way. Morrill Meadows has always been one of my most favorite parks. There are now so many new reasons to love this park. #Ilovekentparks
Last Saturday the community came together to celebrate the Grand Opening of the YMCA. The Kent Y will join the City in providing important services and programs to our community as well as recreational spaces. This partnership is unique, and the City is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the Y.

Tonight is the home opener for the Seattle Thunderbirds, Kent’s very own WHL team. Yesterday a crowd of fans cheered them on with a flag raising ceremony at Kent City Hall. Coach Matt O’Dette, goalie Roddy Ross and Cool Bird all helped me raise the flag. The TBirds kick off their 2019-20 season tonight against Kamloops Blazers at accesso ShoWare Center.
If you’ve never been to a game, you’ve got to go! ShoWare is a great arena for hockey. The local hockey community is so enthusiastic that games are always a good time. And, of course, Kent loves the TBirds. To learn more or buy tickets, go to SeattleThunderbirds.com.
Seattle Thunderbirds' home opener is tonight at accesso ShoWare Center.
