Hello!
September has been packed full of exciting activities already, and today is only the 6th. In addition to some highlights I mention below, I attended Coffee with the Chief, had a meeting with the director of Valley Com (our 911 dispatch center), and met with Kent Downtown Partnership’s new executive director Gaila Gutierrez. I love being out in the community where I can talk to residents and businesses owners one-on-one and hear about the issues that matter. That is one of my favorite parts of this job!
Have a great weekend,
~ Dana
For decades, Lea Bishop was the heart and soul of the Kent Senior Center. Last year, she lost her brave fight with cancer. This week we celebrated her legacy with the unveiling of the Lea Bishop Gallery, an amazing exhibit of her photography. Lea had the ability to capture beauty in everything she photographed. The next time you are in the neighborhood, please stop by the Kent Senior Activity Center (600 E. Smith St.) and check out Lea’s gallery.

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness month. At the City Council meeting this week, I presented a proclamation to Stacy Judd and her son Jack, who is fighting cancer. You have heard the saying – it takes a village to raise a child. In the case of childhood cancer, it takes an army to fight and win. Stacy, who works in community education for our Police Department, and Jack’s Army, a group of friends and family, are helping Jack fight this terrible disease.
Causes of pediatric cancer are still largely unknown. Though new treatments and research have helped improve the survival rate, there is still much research to be done. I encourage you to consider donating to help fund children’s cancer research. Together we can find a cure.Thank you.
Stacy and Jack Judd are supported by Jack's Army in his fight against pediatric cancer.
I am proud to share that I will be graduating from WGU Washington with my MBA this weekend at T-Mobile Field. Through WGU’s accredited program, I have been able to earn a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree in management and leadership and now my MBA while working full-time and serving my City.
What makes it even more special is that WGU Washington is based here in Kent. Wednesday, I joined Chancellor Tonya Drake on New Day Northwest to talk about the benefits of WGU for working adults pursuing higher education. I also want to thank my family for their patience and support while I was doing my homework!
