Local Kenmore Resident Celebrates 50 years of the Northwest Avalanche Center Local Kenmore-ian, Mark Moore, co-founded the Northwest Avalanche Center 50 years ago. As University of Washington graduate students back in the mid 1970's, Mark Moore and Rich Marriott were given a research mission to figure out how to forecast avalanches from a central location. They conducted their research in the cascades and studied the snowpack. The Northwest Avalance Center (NWAC) was born out of their research. Their research and forecasts provided a much-needed information hub for backcountry skiers and adventures and helped to prevent avalanche deaths. Mark even used poetry to communicate the forecast in an engaging way. The NWAC has grown from these two founding fathers to 18 members today. To learn more about their story, watch the King 5 Special. |
