KENMORE, Wash. – At the July 22 meeting, the Kenmore City Council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution in opposition to the Kroger-Albertsons merger. The Safeway grocery market located in Kenmore is a subsidiary owned by Albertsons and the council expressed concern that Kenmore’s Safeway could be negatively impacted by the merger.
Earlier this month, Kroger and Albertsons announced an intent to merge and revealed a list of 579 stores they will sell off to ease antitrust concerns over their proposed giant $24.6 billion merger. The list includes 124 stores in the state of Washington, the most of any state in this transaction. Included in this list is the Safeway located in Kenmore.
The City Council’s concerns include the possibility of store closures, undermining thousands of unionized grocery jobs, increased prices for consumers, and ensuring a thriving local economy and convenient shopping options for the community.
While a Colorado judge has issued an order temporarily blocking the merger, the City Council remains concerned about the impacts of this possible merger and will be watching the legal proceedings closely in the months ahead.
The adopted resolution opposing the merger will be sent to the Federal Trade Commission.
