In the past few weeks, the Kenmore City Council has continued deliberations on the proposed 2023-2024 Biennium Budget. The proposed two-year budget maintains core and basic city services while allocating resources to advance the City Council’s top priorities. Here are a few highlights:
- The City Council is reviewing funding options to implement the adopted Climate Action Plan (Council's #1 priority), including new tax revenue options to pay for it. This discussion will take place at 6 p.m. on November 7.
- The proposed budget follows the Financial Sustainability Plan, adopted in 2020. The Plan recognizes that the City’s relatively flat revenue growth will not keep up with the operational costs of doing business. As a result, the Plan calls for a series of cuts in expenditures as well as new revenues to keep the City’s budget balanced. In keeping with the Plan, the proposed 2023-2024 budget includes a new 6% surface water utility tax that would cost the average Kenmore household about $1.25 per month.
- There are 3 upcoming public hearings scheduled for the community to participate in and provide feedback on the proposed budget; November 7, November 14, and November 21. Adoption of the budget is tentatively scheduled for November 21, 2022.

Thanks to everyone who came out to pick up their free native trees last weekend! King Conservation District (KCD) partnered with the City of Kenmore to offer free native trees to residents and all-in-all, 632 trees were given away. These native trees will be planted in yards and businesses across the City of Kenmore. By planting more trees, we can increase the urban tree canopy that provides us with numerous benefits including cleaner air, more shade, happier people, and reduced stormwater runoff. Thank you to KCD for providing the funding and opportunity to host this event in Kenmore. View a video of the event here.

The weather is changing and days are getting shorter and darker. Next Sunday, November 6, will end Daylight Savings Time and clocks will be turned back 1 hour. Statistically, there is a spike in vehicle and pedestrian accidents when Daylight Saving Time ends because people commuting during rush-hour are driving home in the dark when visibility is reduced. Drivers should be mindful during the darker months and always travel at a safe speed, make sure your headlights are working properly, and be aware of pedestrians and cyclists sharing the road. Pedestrians and cyclists, make sure you can be seen by drivers. You can pick up free high-visibility safety vests during regular business hours at City Hall as part of the Target Zero Initiative. |
