Kenmore, WA - September 15, 2022, to October 15, 2022, has been proclaimed National Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month in Kenmore by the City Council. Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month is celebrated nationally during this time and recognizes the histories, cultures, and contributions of those in our community whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The proclamation highlights the vibrant experiences and diverse contributions that Hispanic and Latin communities have made to our nation through arts, sciences, technology, law, farming, public service, and more, and how these contributions, despite institutional and systemic injustices that limited them, continue to enrich the American tapestry and our local community.
The proclamation was accepted on behalf of the Latinx community by Kenmore resident and public health professional Mariel Torres Mehdipour, who spoke of the diaspora of different cultures and experiences that enhance the Kenmore community. "The experience of Latin Americans is something so similar to the experience of all Americans in our country, because we come here or are born here with a need to dream and do well for our community," Mehdipour said. "Latinx people in Kenmore, in Washington, in the United States; we are here to strengthen our community because we are a part of the community."
"In Kenmore, the Hispanic and Latino American community accounts for nearly 9% of the resident population,” said Mayor Nigel Herbig. "The City Council recognizes the invaluable force this community has on shaping our city and making it a stronger and more enriching place to live."
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.
National Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month summons the Kenmore community to continue building on togetherness and cultural awareness, while celebrating Kenmore’s diversity and intersectionality. Kenmore’s commitment to celebrating diversity, protecting the civil rights of all people, and dismantling systemic racism at a local level is a year-round priority for the City Council, with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) included as one of its top five goals.
