Construction has begun on the Log Boom Park Waterfront Access and Viewing Project! The park will be closed for construction until June 2022. This month, Road Construction Northwest will complete clearing and grubbing activities which will include demolition of the existing east-west path that will be replaced, invasive species removal in the wetlands and shoreline buffer, removal of vegetation and trees in the location where the new sandy beach will be constructed. Of the original eight (8) trees that were identified for removal, only five (5) will be removed. The other three (3) will be protected during construction. Some of the felled trees will be reused as “habitat Logs” along the shoreline. This fall, the project will plant 111 new upland native plants including 30 large conifer trees, 17 large and 64 small deciduous trees, and over a thousand shrubs.
Reminder: The parking lot at Log Boom Park is also closed. Please respect our park neighbors (including businesses) and do not park on their private property.
Planned Environmental Protection Improvements

One of four foundational piers from the 1930’s bridge. |
Construction crews continue working around the clock to complete in-water work during the summertime “fish window,” identified as the time of year least likely to negatively impact fish habitat. Divers have been in the water since early July removing four large foundation piers from the original 1930s bridge. Initially expected to be 124,000 pounds, three of the four piers have weighed over 130,000 pounds. The fourth and final pier – which needed to be cut in half because of its size and distance from the crane was removed on August 9th. This was the largest pier of the four, weighing about 195,000 pounds in total!
Now that all four piers have been removed, the team can begin preparing for tub girder installation the third week of August. Tub girders are the large, concrete and steel beams that support the bridge deck (driving surface) and resemble the shape of a bathtub. The girders will be placed using large cranes and will require a full closure of the east bridge at night.
The Kenmore Rowing Club (KRC) is elated to be operating out of the beautiful new boathouse at Rhododendron Park. This is a community boathouse for the public with the goal of removing barriers to access the sport of rowing for communities and individuals that might not otherwise have the chance to participate. In August we are wrapping up a few of our summer programs, and getting ready for some great new offerings in the fall. Take the rowing interest survey!
With additional boats recently donated to KRC, we are planning expanded programming for the fall. We will offer morning Masters (adults 18+) classes during the week and weekend, including Learn To Row, Novice, and Experienced options. The Kenmore Rowing Club provides reduced and zero-cost scholarships for low income youth.
