Kenmore receives Municipal Excellence Award for Financial Sustainability Plan

Kenmore, WA – With this year’s Municipal Excellence Awards, the Association of Washington Cities (AWC) honored five cities putting creative ideas to use for their communities, including the City of Kenmore for its financial sustainability plan.

"This year's winning projects demonstrate just a few of the ways that Washington's city leaders are finding innovative solutions to a diverse range of challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and racial equity movement," said Peter B. King, AWC CEO. "Each year, AWC's Municipal Excellence Awards provide ideas and inspiration to communities around the state, showcasing successes that can be replicated in other cities."

The Kenmore city council chartered a seven-member task force of city residents in early 2020 to gather input and recommend solutions to improve the city’s long-term financial sustainability. In addition to consulting a financial advisor and hosting community open houses, the task force launched an online interactive budget simulator tool. Kenmore residents responded by generating over 200 budget simulations full of hundreds of budget ideas. The task force created other innovative tools to evaluate revenue and spending options and develop workable strategies. The end result was the Kenmore Financial Sustainability Plan, now adopted and being implemented, which balances the city’s operating budget and strengthens its financial reserves through 2028.

"We are thrilled to be recognized by the AWC for our work creating and implementing the Financial Sustainability Plan in Kenmore," said Kenmore Mayor David Baker. "By including the community in conversations around Kenmore's financial future, we found creative ways to assess priorities and plan for a balanced operating budget over the next six years."

This is Kenmore's sixth AWC Municipal Excellence Award, which is open each year to any Washington city or town and recognizes innovative city projects that significantly improve the quality of life for their communities. Kenmore's previous Municipal Excellence Awards include:

  • 2020 The Hangar at Town Square
  • 2018 Economic Development
  • 2015 Coolest City Hall
  • 2014 Process Streamlining
  • 2013 Innovative Costs Savings
