City Council Adopts Public Works Site Selection Criteria; The City Continues to Search for Potential Properties
On April 19, 2021, City Council adopted Public Works Maintenance and Operations Facility Site Selection Criteria that will guide and refine the search for an adequate property to house the permanent site for Kenmore's public works department.
In January of 2019, Kenmore began operating its own in-house public works operations department after nearly twenty years of contracting for public works maintenance services with Lake Forest Park. Public works, which provides maintenance and preservation of the City’s parks and natural areas, streets, and surface water pipes and treatment systems, has since been operating in two temporary locations: the backside of the U.S. Post Office building and the vacant lot at the northwest corner of 67th Avenue NE and Bothell Way. These locations are too small and do not adequately serve to meet the needs of the operation.
Following two unsuccessful attempts to acquire property, the City Council directed staff to revise the site selection criteria. City Council assisted with this task by forming a subcommittee (Councilmembers Curtis, Srebnik, and O’Cain) to review and amend the site selection criteria. The adopted Public Works Site Selection Criteria and Process uses 5-phase approach that includes multiple open houses so the public will have several opportunities to provide feedback throughout the selection process.
The City is currently searching for potential properties to be evaluated as part of Phase 1. These properties will be sorted based on disqualifying criteria, such as a minimum usable property area, property configuration, and adverse environmental or community impacts.
