Kenmore City Council to Discuss Public Works Site Selection Criteria on March 15 at 7 p.m.

In 2018, the City of Lake Forest Park gave notice that starting in 2019, it would no longer provide contract services for public works maintenance for the City of Kenmore, which meant that Kenmore would have to start providing public works maintenance services “in-house.” Public works maintenance services include the maintenance and preservation of the City’s parks and natural areas, streets, and surface water pipes and treatment systems.

Since Lake Forest Park’s notice back in 2018, the City of Kenmore has been searching for an adequate property to house its public works vehicles, equipment, materials, and personnel. So far, the City has made two unsuccessful attempts to acquire property for this purpose. After the last attempt in 2020, the City Council directed city staff to go back to the drawing board and come back to the City Council with revised site selection criteria.

Chief among the site selection criteria is at least 1.5 acres of relatively flat, usable, dry ground. The City would prefer to find a willing seller of such a property, and the City encourages its residents and businesses to help get the word out in search of that willing seller. Meanwhile, the City Council will be discussing proposed revised site selection criteria at Monday’s City Council meeting at 7 p.m. Click here to view the meeting agenda and the proposed criteria. Public comment at the beginning of the meeting is welcomed.

The Public Works maintenance team currently operates in the back side of the post office building and on a half-acre site on the south side of the library. Both locations are too small and serve as interim locations until a permanent site can be acquired. In the City’s 2021-2022 Biennium Budget Message, Kenmore City Manager Rob Karlinsey said the following:

“Kenmore’s public works department maintains the City’s essential infrastructure, and it is imperative that the City find an adequate, long-term site for a Public Works facility and yard. Our Public Works Operations team is currently located at a temporary site on SR522 that allows them to limp along but is woefully inadequate. Public Works does not have a special interest group to stand up and fight for it. That’s where the Kenmore City Council and staff come in—it is up to us to be that voice for the greater good of the people of Kenmore, and we should persist in searching for and acquiring the right property for public works.”
