On Monday, January 4, the west (currently southbound) bridge will be closed to traffic for at least 10 months as crews prepare for demolition and replacement of the existing structurally deficient bridge with a new bridge and improved pedestrian and bicycle facilities. Wet weather may delay the closure.
What to expect with the west bridge closure:
- One lane open in each direction (northbound and southbound) for at least 10 months on the existing east bridge.
- Increased traffic congestion and lengthy delays.
- Uniformed police officers as needed at 68th Ave NE/NE 175th St and 68th Ave NE/NE 170th St intersections to mitigate traffic congestion.
- Possible alteration of traffic signal timing/phasing at 68th Ave NE and NE 170th St intersection when needed.
Originally scheduled for this week, restriping the east bridge roadway to accommodate traffic in both directions may be delayed due to weather. What to expect during restriping:
- Work is weather-dependent and will take several hours to complete.
- Be prepared for long delays and plan to use alternate routes.
- Intermittent constriction from two-way traffic to one lane may occur during striping.
- Striping will be in place for at least 10 months as the existing west bridge is demolished and replaced.
Two days are also needed for ground shoring at both the north and south approaches to the new bridge. This involves overhead work and one day is currently scheduled for Jan. 18th, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day while the other day will be scheduled around January 18th. This activity is also dependent on weather conditions. What to expect during shoring:
- Overhead work may extend into southbound traffic lane, and traffic will be halted in southbound lane if this occurs.
- Intermittent stoppage of southbound traffic that will last up to 10 minutes each occurrence with breaks between each occurrence to allow traffic to clear the work area.
- Be prepared for long delays and plan to use alternate routes.
In addition to a structurally safe new bridge with higher capacity, this project will provide a new bike lane, pedestrian promenade, and a viewing platform to enhance traveler experiences. Thank you for your patience as we progress!
On December 30, Governor Inslee announced a one-week extension of current COVID Stay-Safe-Stay-Healthy restrictions to January 11, 2021. The governor also extended Washington’s statewide eviction moratorium to March 31, 2021. Coinciding with the Governor’s proclamations, the temporary moratorium on residential tenant, and commercial and non-profit tenant evictions in Kenmore has been extended as well.
The City of Kenmore special events have looked a little different this past year, but we have continued to celebrate through our virtual and outdoor events. As we look ahead, we want to hear from you about what events you want to see in the future here in Kenmore. Take the survey and let us know your feedback!
Park Projects at Log Boom Park and Squire’s Landing Park What’s new for 2021
Construction is anticipated for the two 2016 voter-approved Walkways and Waterways bond measure projects at Log Boom and Squire’s Landing Parks. The project designs continue to be consistent with the 2016 Bond Levy concept plans with some changes. The projects will improve waterfront access to Lake Washington and the Sammamish River as well as restore native vegetation for wildlife habitat. Receipt of permits is nearing completion this winter. Bidding begins early 2021 through spring and construction is anticipated Summer 2021 through Summer 2023. Major portions of both Log Boom and Squire’s Landing Parks will be closed during construction for approximately two years.
The Log Boom Park Waterfront Access & Viewing Project will expand the existing beach area; restore native habitat areas; create a new main trail, boat rental building, picnic shelter, and water access for hand-powered watercraft. The Squire’s Landing Waterfront & Natural Open Space Access project will restore native habitat areas; create a public hand-powered watercraft facility with staging areas, float and hand-carry launches, a community plaza, enhanced natural areas.

Kenmore Officer Andrew Boyer coordinated with the Northshore School District, Northshore Fire, the Northshore Emergency Management Coalition, Snapdoodle Toys, and Costco to provide toys and supplies for a distribution event during the school district's regular lunch pick-up service. These toys were handed out to kids from throughout the school district during their service at Woodin Elementary. During this particularly challenging year in which most "Shop with a Cop" events were canceled, this was a nice gesture by Officer Boyer and our community and government partners to coordinate providing these kids with a holiday gift.

Chief Moen had the opportunity to read to Ms. Comstock and Ms. Burrow's 4th grade classes at Kenmore Elementary a few weeks ago. In these trying times, it was fitting that they read about a worried potato who made the best of his situation and lived in the now. Thank you to Ms. Comstock and Ms. Burrows.

The City of Kenmore is seeking volunteers from the Kenmore community to serve as non-law enforcement Community Representatives if an independent investigation becomes necessary to investigate the use of deadly force by a Kenmore Police officer. Although the Kenmore Police Department has never had a fatal use of force incident in the city’s 22 year history, Washington’s Law Enforcement Training and Community Safety Act requires that an independent investigation team (IIT) investigate any use of deadly force by a police officer when it results in death, substantial bodily harm, or great bodily harm. The goal of the IIT is to enhance accountability and increase trust between law enforcement and the community.
If you are interested in applying to be a Kenmore volunteer non-law enforcement Community Representative, please fill out the application by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 and submit it to brandon.moen@kingcounty.gov.
