UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS

October 1: Kenmore Business Open House

The City and the Kenmore Business Alliance are sponsoring a Business Open House on Thursday, October 1, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Kenmore City Hall. Stop by and meet up with local business people and hear the latest on what’s happening in your city! Light refreshments will be served.

October 7: Walk to School Day

National Walk to School Day is October 7. The City is collaborating with Safe Kids Eastside and Arrowhead Elementary to host an early morning event near Arrowhead Elementary. Other interactive events, including a fun Clifford the Big Red Dog book reading, may take place at additional local elementary schools. On October 17, the Kenmore Public Library will host a reading of the book, geared toward kids in grades K-3.

October 10: Jack Crawford Skate Court Grand Opening

Come join us at the grand opening of the new Jack Crawford Skate Court on Saturday, October 10 at 11 a.m. There will be special live demonstrations by Skate Like a Girl and Grindline, live music, and more. The design of the new skate court at City Hall is the result of collaboration with the community. Check the City's online calendar soon for more details.

October 10: Emergency Preparedness Workshop

Join the Kenmore and Lake Forest Park communities for an emergency preparedness workshop. The event will be held at Northshore Fire Department Station 51 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and will focus on neighborhood watch groups. Additional topics include basic emergency preparedness kits, emergency communications, water purification, generator operation and safety, cribbing and lifting, fire extinguisher use, CERT, gas and water shutoff, water purification, and alternative heat. October 12: Wallace Swamp Creek Park Nature Walk

The final nature walk at Wallace Swamp Creek Park is Monday, October 12. The free walks are lead by volunteer leader Linda Phillips and include a 1.5 to 2 hour walk over two miles of paved and primitive trails through the 25-acre park. This is a fantastic opportunity to observe and learn about the more than 35 different species of birds in the area. Meet at 9 a.m. at the kiosk at Wallace Swamp Creek Park parking lot, 19851 73rd Ave NE to register. Or more information, call City Hall at 425-398-8900.

October 24: Jack Crawford "Courtesy is Contagious in Kenmore" Day

The City will host the annual "Courtesy is Contagious in Kenmore" Day, a fun park clean-up event on October 24 in honor of Kenmore’s first Mayor Jack V. Crawford. Volunteers are needed to help with weeding, planting, mulching, and picking up trash from 9 a.m. to noon at Log Boom Park, 17415 61st Ave NE. Volunteers should dress for the weather, wear closed toed shoes, and bring work gloves if possible. The City will provide equipment and refreshments. How do YOU Imagine Kenmore?

The Imagine Kenmore Community Workshop was held on September 22 and had a great turn-out! For those who were unable to attend the event, there is still time to share your ideas on what changes should be made to improve walking and bicycling infrastructure and parks in Kenmore. The deadline for online idea submission is fast approaching though, so visit www.imaginekenmore.com BEFORE the October 6 deadline.

The online mapping tool allows you to see what projects are underway, planned (funded), and conceptual (identified in City planning documents) throughout the city and make comments about where you want to see improvements. You can also take the short online survey to share your thoughts and ideas.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the City of Kenmore is helping spread awareness through the Purple Light Nights® campaign. Purple Light Nights® is the inspiration of the Covington Domestic Violence Task Force in King County and is meant to increase the awareness of domestic violence issues and its affects upon children and families and provide education on building healthy relationships. This is done through the presence of purple (black) lights in house windows and the City of Kenmore is giving away a limited supply of lights. Stop by City Hall to pick up your light today. Washington State Disaster Preparedness Month

October is Washington State Disaster Preparedness Month and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio Month. NOAA Weather Radio provides emergency alerts about approaching hazards, providing a useful resource in emergency situations. To be prepared for a disaster, you should keep your emergency kit handy- complete with water, battery-powered radio, and first aid kit. Make sure your family has a plan in place for where to meet or how to contact each other. For more important information, visit www.ready.gov.

I-405 Communities in Motion

King County Metro’s “In Motion” initiative is coming to Kenmore! The program encourages King County residents to expand their transportation horizons by helping them increase their use of travel alternatives. Every car trip we eliminate is beneficial and through taking a pledge, you can help save gallons of gas and have a positive impact on the environment. There are also ways to earn rewards by recruiting others to participate and by sharing your stories and pictures. Registration opens early October. Halloween Safety Tips

Fall celebrations such as Halloween and Harvest can be a fun time of year for kids. Amidst the costumes and treats, it's also important to practice personal safety to help keep everyone safe. The CDC has some put together some helpful tips for trick-or-treating below. For more information, visit www.cdc.gov/family/halloween .

S Swords, knives, and other costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.
A Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.
F Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.
E Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them
H Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always WALK and don't run from house to house.
A Always test make-up in a small area first.
L Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible.
L Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.
O Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe.
W Wear well-fitted masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.
E Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made my strangers.
E Enter homes only if you're with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses. Never accept rides from strangers.
N Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.
