Episode 5: Connection and Belonging at Work
This message is being shared by the Health Care Authority (HCA) on behalf of the Washington State Department of Health (DOH).
In this episode, Dr. Carrie Perkins is joined by Darrow Brown, Chief of Inclusion, Belonging and Well-Being at DOH, for a thoughtful conversation on loneliness, connection, and what it means to feel seen at work.
Darrow shares his personal story of what he calls “Club Lonely,” reflecting on the experience of losing community, navigating major life transitions, and rebuilding connection. The conversation explores how loneliness is not only an individual experience, but something that can show up across workplaces and systems, especially for people working in health care and public health.
The episode also highlights practical ways leaders and teams can support belonging, including:
- Storytelling.
- Listening.
- Modeling vulnerability.
- Creating space for connection.
- Building workplace cultures where people feel valued as whole people, not just for their productivity.
