Low Dose, Big Benefits

In 2024, March of Dimes launched the Low Dose, Big Benefits campaign. This multi-year campaign has a goal to reduce preeclampsia and premature birth by promoting the use of low-dose aspirin during pregnancy. The campaign features U.S. Olympian and entrepreneur Allyson Felix, a mother with lived experience, as a spokesperson.

Preeclampsia risks during pregnancy

The Washington State Maternal Mortality Review Panel and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) both found that 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable. Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, like preeclampsia, are among the leading causes of death and Black individuals are at higher risk. Preeclampsia affects 1 in 25 pregnancies in the U.S., with potential impacts on both the birthing person and the baby during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and across their lifetimes.

The evidence is strong for pregnant people at increased risk for of preeclampsia, taking low-dose aspirin can:

Reduce their risk of developing the condition by 15%.
Reduce their risk of premature birth by 20%.

About the collaboration

The Washington State Perinatal Collaborative at DOH has joined this effort. We are working with March of Dimes to educate health care professionals about the benefits of low-dose aspirin, including:

OB-GYNs
Family Medicine Physicians with Obstetrics who provide obstetric care
Midwives
Nurses
Pharmacists

DOH has aligned with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Practice Advisory to increase awareness in pregnant individuals, their families, and the public. Our goal is to make sure pregnant individuals feel empowered to ask their care providers whether low-dose aspirin can benefit them.

The Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine has also partnered with the March of Dimes to amplify the importance of Low Dose, Big Benefits.
