The Health Care Authority (HCA) has updated the community health worker billing guide for dates of service on and after July 1, 2025.
What’s new:
-
First visit flexibility: The requirement for the first visit of the month to be in-person has been removed. The first CHI or PIN service each month may now be delivered in-person or via telemedicine.
-
Clarity on personnel: The guide now includes clearer definitions around auxiliary personnel eligible to provide CHI and PIN services, including CHWs.
These updates aim to improve access, reduce barriers to care, and ensure clear guidance for providers delivering social needs-based services.
A new frequently asked questions document is also available for questions related to requirements and billing.

The CHW WAC and billing guide have been published, but CHW services cannot be billed until the benefit goes live July 1, 2025.
Providers should review both documents, begin preparing for provider enrollment, and participate in the upcoming community and office hour calls.
