Free pain and opioid consultation service for Washington State health care providers
What is it?
The University of Washington Pain and Opioid Provider Consultation Hotline is a free telephone consultation service for health care providers caring for patients with chronic pain issues. Any health care provider in Washington State can receive consultation and recommendations from a pharmacist or physician with specialized expertise in chronic pain care. Contact the hotline by calling 844-520-PAIN (7246) or by emailing painhotline@uw.edu.
How can it help?
Chronic pain management is complex, and the pandemic has made it more challenging. Drug overdose deaths have increased significantly, rising by more than 40 percent here in Washington State. The University of Washington Pain Team continues to support providers to work with patients to improve their pain management, function, and quality of life.
Free clinical advice is available for all Washington providers caring for patients with underlying pain, including patients with complex pain medication regimens, high-risk comorbidities, or high dose opioids.
Consultations meet Washington State expert pain consultation requirements for patients with an MED≥120 (WAC 246-853-735).
Consultations may address:
- Opioid conversions or rotations
- Opioid taper plans
- Opioid withdrawal management
- Perioperative buprenorphine management
- Buprenorphine conversions
- Adjunctive treatment options
- Complex behavioral problems
- High risk comorbidities assessments
- Interpreting the WA PMP
- Interpreting urine toxicology analysis
- Managing chronic pain with concurrent substance use disorders
- Education on opioid guidelines
When can I call 844-520-PAIN (7246)?
The consultation line is open 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Monday through Friday (Pacific). Providers can call at any time and receive a call back within one working day. You can also email with any questions or to schedule a consultation: painhotline@uw.edu
