Announcements

Mental Health Promotion Project (MHPP) grantee shifts plan to continue services during COVID-19 pandemic

Educational Service District (ESD) 105 recently pivoted their MHPP plan in response to COVID-19. ESD 105 was able to train 180 community members from Yakima, Kittitas, and Grant Counties in the Question Persuade Refer (QPR) suicide prevention curriculum. They also have 161 community members registered for the upcoming virtual School Resource Officer Summit, which will focus on upstream prevention and mental health promotion. Because both opportunities were available online, ESD 105 were able to engage new partners and increase their reach.

Congratulations to student support program manager, Emily Nelson, Coalition Coordinator, Lizbet Maceda, and their QPR team!

Do you have a story to share? Please send to you DBHR Manager or e-mail Prevention@hca.wa.gov.

Feedback requested on the effects of COVID-19 on prevention work

We are asking for your input on issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on local prevention services. Please complete this short survey to help inform our future efforts.

Update on Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training (SAPST) Training of Trainers (TOT)

In partnership with the Northwest Prevention Technology Transfer Center, we will be hosting a free virtual SAPST TOT. Participants will be divided into teams to teach back short sections of the curriculum and receive constructive feedback from the trainer and each other.

The training will consist of:

  • August 3, 9-10 a.m. - Technology orientation and training overview
  • August 3-17 - Master trainer will meet individually with teams to prepare them for teach-backs.
  • August 17-21, 9-11 a.m. - Master trainer and all participants will meet virtually daily.

Please see more information and participant requirements on The Athena Forum Training Calendar.

Resources

Pride

LGBTQ+ resources

June is Pride Month, which commemorates the Stonewall riots in 1969 and is an opportunity to recognize the impact LGBTQ+ people have in our communities.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth report higher rates of substance use compared to heterosexual and cisgender peers and are at a greater risk for developing substance use and mental health disorders. They are also more likely to experience bullying.

Ways to support the LGBTQ+ community in your work:
