Honoring Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month
In Washington State, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities make up 10 to 12 percent of the population. These communities include immigrants, refugees and U.S.-born Washingtonians. These cultures, families and experiences are an important part of our State.
AANHPI communities help Washington grow everyday through healthcare, education, small business, public service, and community leadership. This work helps shape the state’s culture, economy and future.
This year’s theme is “Power in Unity: Strengthening Communities Together.” The Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC) chose this theme. It focuses on strength, stories and community connections. As said by members of the Office of Equity (EQUITY) team:
- 정 (jeong) - This Korean word means empathy, connection, and caring for others.
- 仁 (rén) - This Chinese word means kindness, compassion, and respect for others.
This theme reminds us we are stronger when we stand together. Unity does not mean everyone is the same. It means respecting differences while helping one another.
We see the ongoing impact of anti-Asian hate. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, incidents have increased. This all comes back to fear, misinformation, and harmful stereotypes. Even though some attacks have decreased, Asian Americans still say they have had to change their daily routines to stay safe.
From an equity perspective, unity should be shown through actions, not just words. This means making sure people have access to language and culture. We must maintain safe and welcoming communities for all Washingtonians.
As we celebrate AANHPI Heritage month, EQUITY honors the many cultures, histories, languages, and communities that are part of the Asian diaspora in the United States. Asian communities are not all the same. We are a diverse group of people, shaped by resilience, traditions, and connection.
The Washington State Office of Equity remains committed to building a Washington for All where every community can live with dignity, safety, and opportunity.
