Governor Ferguson condemns Trump Administration’s termination of $1.1B in energy grant funding across Washington
OLYMPIA – Today Governor Bob Ferguson condemned the Trump Administration’s termination of more than $1.1 billion in funding for energy projects across Washington state. Among the targeted funding is $1 billion for the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub, a critical project that will build out a clean hydrogen economy, create over 10,000 jobs, and lower emissions in technologies that are among the hardest to decarbonize.
Washington’s hydrogen hub is among the largest projects targeted by the federal Energy Department, which vowed to cancel $7.5 billion in energy grants — funds that Congress previously awarded to states across the country.
The attack on these funds impacts almost entirely Democratic-led states, right on the heels of a government shutdown that affects nearly 80,000 federal workers in Washington.
“It is outrageous that this administration is using a government shutdown to punish blue states like Washington,” Governor Ferguson said. “These projects will lower costs, create jobs, and reduce air pollution. We’re working with the Attorney General’s Office to fight this illegal action.”
The 11 federally funded projects are critical to advancing Washington’s transition to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. They move the state closer to more innovative, cost-effective climate technologies. Without these projects, Washington will lose thousands of clean energy jobs and its competitive edge that are essential to achieving a cleaner economy.
The projects are located in at least five counties across the state. They include efforts to advance zero-emission commercial vehicles, reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions, advance high-efficiency and affordable solar panel technologies, and more. The recipients and the amounts of their grants are:
- Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association: $1 billion (multiple counties statewide)
- Nippon Dynawave: $46.6 million (Cowlitz County)
- PACCAR Inc.: two projects totaling $68 million (Skagit County)
- CleanFiber Inc.: $10 million (Lewis County)
- Spokane Edo LLC: $5.3 million (Spokane County)
- SilFab Solar WA Inc.: $3 million (Skagit County)
- Washington State University: four projects totaling $9.8 million (Whitman County)
