Join the Latino Leadership Network (LLN) for our next membership meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 13, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
To encourage LLN members to attend the kickoff celebration for the newly formed Hawaiians, Asians, and Pacific Islanders Promoting an Empowerment Network (HAPPEN) Celebration at the Capitol Campus from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., the LLN General Membership meeting will officially start at 4 pm. LLN leadership will host an informal “charla” gathering for the membership to mingle and get to know each other from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.. The charla portion will not be recorded.

Angela Araque, Health and Wellness Committee Chair
Angela Araque is the Culturally Responsive Communications Strategist at the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). She serves as the agency's web accessibility and internal language access coordinator. She strongly believes in the power of diversity and cultural competence. Angela advocates for equitable, inclusive, and anti-racist practices to ensure effective communication for all. Prior to her current role, she supported the Migrant and Multilingual Education Program at OSPI.
Angela is originally from Bogota, Colombia. Her communications background allowed her to provide electoral education and foster community participation, inclusion, and representation in remote communities of the country during presidential campaigns. She also worked with Indigenous artisans by developing communication plans to launch online businesses and ensure global access to markets and customers.
Angela is also a runner and triathlete. She is currently training to qualify for the Boston Marathon and complete a full Ironman in 2023. As a woman of color, she has learned to prioritize self-care. For her, physical activity and meditation are vital to reduce stress, develop resilience and confidence, and improve physical and mental health and sense of well-being. She is excited about serving, sharing, connecting, and engaging the Latinx community through health and wellness activities.

Diana Blair, Events and Conferences Committee Co-Chair
Diana is the Executive Assistant for the Chief Operating Officer at the Department of Natural Resources. She started working for the Washington State in 2018 with the Department of Children, Youth & Families. Before starting her career with the state, she worked at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for six years as an Executive Assistant to the General Counsel and COO. She has also worked as an Executive Assistant in the corporate arena and as a Legal Assistant. Diana is a Latina who was born in Texas but raised in Washington State, born to a Mexican-American mother from Texas and a father from Reynosa Tamaulipas, Mexico. Her parents were migrant farmworkers in the Yakima Valley who taught her the value of education and the love for God and Family.

Sedona Leza, Events and Conferences Committee Co-Chair
Sedona Leza is a Transportation Engineer for the Washington State Department of Transportation in Port Angeles. They graduated from Santa Clara University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil, Sustainable, and Environmental Engineering and a Minor in Spanish Language and Literature. A Seattle native who attended elementary school at John Stanford International School with half the day taught entirely in Japanese, Sedona delights in the complexities and contradictions of language, ethnicity, race, and identity. With the guidance of Seattle Prep’s Black Student Union and after attending a Summit of Latine students from numerous western US Jesuit high schools, Sedona founded but did not lead The Latin@ Club, which continues today under a different name.
Sedona celebrates their tejana heritage with loud and joyous laughter. Her hobbies include reading, singing, crochet, cooking, and making pine cone designs on the forest floor. Nearing their first anniversary as a state employee with enthusiasm for virtual community-building opportunities, they are honored to join the LLN Board. To celebrate the 2022 Hispanic Heritage Month, the Latino Leadership Network is organizing a series of four lunch and learn Zoom webinars. These webinars are open to all; you don't have to be Latino nor a member of LLN to participate.
You will need to register for each lunch and learn separately at least 24-hours in advance to be able to access the meeting link. We encourage you to register early as space is limited.
A recording of some of these presentations will be available in the Latino Leadership Network’s YouTube channel at the end of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Millersylvania Follow up Survey
LLN will be sending a follow-up survey to those who registered for the Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-Off Celebration at Millersylvania Park on Saturday, Sept. 17. The survey will ask for your preference(s) for some of the activities organized by Washington State Parks including hikes and a boating safety workshop. Please make sure you fill out this survey promptly.
Road Trip Pit Stop Recommendations
LLN will be asking the membership to send your favorite restaurant and/or food truck recommendations from all over the Pacific Northwest via an upcoming survey. Help us create a Road Trip Pit Stop recommendations list of your favorite eats. Details forthcoming.

Employees from state agencies, higher education institutions, public employer groups, and school districts across Washington have the opportunity to earn 100 points for each lunch and learn they register for. Beginning September 12, current SmartHealth members will be able to connect with these activities. Employees new to SmartHealth will need to register for an account first.

LLN Member and Washington State LGBTQ Commission Executive Director, J. Manny Santiago will be recognized by the National Diversity Council as one of the 2022 National Latino Leaders at their 7th Annual National Latino Leadership Conference.
The conference will be held Sept. 20-21 in Miami, Florida. The Council for Latino Workplace Equity (CLWE), an initiative from the National Diversity Council, highlights individuals who “contribute to creating and promoting a culture where Latino talent is supported and leveraged for organizational success.”
The Council for Latino Workplace Equity is a resource and platform to foster workplace equity for Latino talent. It highlights the pertinent issues concerning Latinos in the workplace in order to advance equal opportunities and incite change within organizations. The National Diversity Council is a non-profit organization committed to fostering a learning environment for organizations to grow in their knowledge of diversity. The council affords opportunities for organizations to share best practices and learn from top corporate leaders in the areas of diversity and inclusion.

The University of Washington - Tacoma is holding their second “Celebrando Comunidad: Latinx Celebration and Awards” event on Oct. 14 at the UW Tacoma Campus.
The event recognizes and celebrates the recognitions of those in the South Puget Sound who identify as members of Latinx communities and organizations who directly and positively impact South Sound Latinx communities.
