Hello! I hope everyone is staying healthy! Right now, COVID-19 is front and center for very good reason. However, we must also look beyond COVID-19 to the ongoing systemic issues that are of concern and will continue to be concerns beyond the pandemic.
To that point, prior to the most recent series of outbreaks, OCO was working with family members to improve the mail policy. I would like to finalize this work and want to make sure that our recommendations are comprehensive. If you have CONCERNS or RECOMMENDATIONS related to the mail process, please use this form to submit them. I will be compiling these and also inviting Tracy Schneider to come back on a weekly phone call to discuss questions/concerns. Please stay tuned for that.
Second, one of the systemic issues selected for our 2020 work by community stakeholders was mental health services/access. Elisabeth Kingsbury in my office has been analyzing the complaints we have received and creating a draft report. She has met several times with Dr. Rainer, DOC's Director of Mental Health Services. She is going to be on our Thursday public phone call on January 14 to go over the topline issues and recommendations and receive any feedback!
On the note of systemic issues, OCO staff presented the systemic issues that we plan to work on in 2021 as part of our December stakeholder meeting. The powerpoint from that meeting is attached to this email. If anyone has a suggestion/request for a different/additional systemic issue, please feel free to email me at joanna.carns@gov.wa.gov.
