SB 6251, titled AN ACT Relating to authorizing the governor to enter into compacts with federally recognized Indian tribes principally located within Washington state for the issuance of tribal license plates and vehicle registration, has been introduced in the Senate. The Office of Financial Management has identified this bill as requiring a ten-year projection of increased cost to the taxpayers or affected fee payers.

Ten-year projection:

Department of Licensing:

The proposed legislation would enable DOL to enter into compacts for vehicle registration and issuance of tribal license plates with federally recognized Indian tribes principally located within Washington State. It is not known how many tribes might participate in these compacts or how many vehicles might be registered with tribal plates issued. There are 29 federally recognized Indian tribes with membership principally located within Washington State. There were approximately 179,000 tribal members residing in Washington State based on the 2010 Indian Affairs Survey.
