HB 1653, titled AN ACT Relating to increasing the maximum tax rate for the voter-approved local sales and use tax for emergency communication systems and facilities, has been passed by the House Committee on Finance. The Office of Financial Management has identified this bill as requiring a ten-year projection of increased cost to the taxpayers or affected fee payers.

Ten-year projection:

REVENUE ESTIMATES

If the current counties that levy the emergency communication tax received voter-approval to increase the tax rate to 0.2 percent, emergency communication funding would increase by over $55 million in Fiscal Year 2020.

There is no direct impact on state revenues although the Department of Revenue retains 0.1 percent of collections to cover administrative costs of collecting local taxes.
