County Executive Dave Somers to discuss Diversion Center

The governor, sheriff and
executive will discuss the county’s Diversion Center which builds upon a successful pilot program. The Center will help people with addiction, homelessness, and mental illness with services and options, instead of incarceration.
Snohomish County experiences around 18% of
all heroin-related deaths in Washington although the county comprises only 10%
of the state’s population. In 2016, approximately 1 out of every 6 heroin
deaths in Washington state occurred in Snohomish County.
As part of Inslee’s
comprehensive opioid package, he has proposed $500,000 in the supplemental operations budget for
the pilot project. The estimated cost to operate the Diversion Center is $1.5
million annually.

Start students
Location: Port of Everett (1205 13th St #203, Everett)
The governor will meet with students studying marine science and discuss climate change and ocean acidification.
ORCA is an early college
academy where students can earn up to two years of college
credit while completing their high school education. Most students graduate
with an associate’s degree in addition to a high school
diploma. Two-thirds of ORCA graduates pursue a STEM bachelor’s of arts
degree following their academy experience.
