“These webinars offer an employer-focused summary of two or three topics and end with a live Q&A where employers can ask questions," says Rafael Colón, Employment Security Department’s employer outreach manager, "Since 2021, we have served over 14,000 employers through this platform."

What is SharedWork?

SharedWork is a voluntary program for employers that can help your business make the best use of time and money by paying workers a portion of unemployment insurance (UI) benefits when their hours are reduced. This gives employers the power to prevent layoffs and a new method to manage the bottom line. Eligible employers can enroll by submitting a short application and employee list to the SharedWork program, and eligible employees file claims to receive benefits.

  • Systematic way to conserve payroll costs. SharedWork employers can reduce hours of work for some employees while others continue to work full-time.
  • Long-term strategy for employment stability. SharedWork employers reduce worker hours no less than 10% but no more than 50% and provide the employee with 24-hour notice to any schedule changes. The program has been proven to raise workplace morale and employee loyalty.
  • Helps employers stabilize through economic slowdowns. SharedWork employers enroll at no cost and can participate year after year, bringing supplemental income to workers when it's best for the business to reduce employee hours.
