Thank you for sharing your feedback!
We are designing a grant program to meet the needs of landfills that are required to comply with the Landfill Methane Emissions rule (Chapter 173-408 WAC). To do this, we asked for your input on the proposed landfill methane emissions reductions grant guidelines, including projects and costs associated with meeting the new requirements, and you responded!
We would like to say thank you for taking time to share your feedback. We appreciate the thoughtful questions and comments we received during the virtual listening session and via the online comment system. Your input is being considered and we will update the grant guidelines to include changes reflecting what we learn.
Prior to the grant application opening, we will share what we heard and how we incorporated the feedback into this grant program on our website and through our email distribution list. Use the button below to sign up to receive email notices!
*Application period: August 6, 2024 - October 1, 2024
We will announce the opening of the application period for the landfill methane emissions reduction grant on our grant website and via our email distribution list.

New rule adoption: Landfill Methane Emissions
On Monday, May 13, 2024, we adopted the Landfill Methane Emissions rule that will help reduce emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, from municipal solid waste landfills in the state.
Landfill owners and operators affected by the new rule will be required to install gas collection and control equipment, energy recovery devices, and/or treatment and processing systems to reduce their methane emissions. In addition, the rule requires quarterly monitoring of the landfill surface, quarterly monitoring of gas collection and control system equipment, and a timeline to ensure any methane leaks are quickly fixed.
Owners and operators of affected landfills are eligible to apply for the landfill methane emissions reduction grant, funded by Washington’s Climate Commitment Act, to help comply with the new requirements.
