Medicaid Apple Health, Medicare and Dual Eligible Resource
Dear subscribers,
Do you have questions regarding eligibility for Medicare eligibility?
The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services offers resources regarding eligibility and how to apply for the benefits you need.
- If you currently have Apple Health (Medicaid), you must apply for Medicare when turning 65 - unless you are a DDCS client who meets the social security requirements for Medicare enrollment.
- Applying for Medicare will not cause you to lose your Apple Health (Medicaid) as long as you continue to meet Medicaid’s income eligibility requirement.
- When you are dually eligible, Medicare will become your primary health insurance coverage and Apple Health (Medicaid) will be your secondary health coverage.
- If you meet the income eligibility requirement for full Medicaid benefits and you meet the Medicare age requirement of 65 or older you’re considered dually eligible. Meaning you’re eligible for both federal Medicare and state Medicaid coverage.
Medicare Advantage offers a Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan designed specifically to meet the healthcare needs of dually eligible individuals.
