Social Security Administration Changes
Effective Jan. 6, 2025, the Social Security Administration began requiring people to make appointments to be seen in-person at the local office. If a person goes to SSA during walk-in hours without an appointment, they will be advised to make an appointment and return at a later date. People who are unable to schedule an appointment and require immediate attention may still walk-in, however, the wait times will vary.
If a person needs assistance or has questions regarding their SSDI or SSI application they can:
- Create a my SSA account.
- Call SSA’s National Hotline 1-800-772-1213, between 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. local time, Mon. - Fri.
- Call the local field office between 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Mon. - Fri. Wait times to speak to a representative are typically shorter in the morning (8 a.m. - 10 a.m.) or late afternoon (after 2 p.m.), later in the week (Wed. - Fri.), and later in the month.
- If a person is unable to schedule an appointment and must be seen in-person they should confirm the local field office address and hours of operation by entering their zip code into the office locator.
A simplified online SSDI and SSI application is available for some adult applicants. An applicant may complete this online application if they:
- Are 18-64 years and 10 months and applying for SSI and SSDI.
- Have never been married.
- Have never applied for SSI for themselves or a child.
- Are U.S. citizens or noncitizens (eligibility has not changed.)
DDA staff may contact Tabitha Mackey, Social Security Program Manager, phone 360-462-7704, if there are further questions.
