Keeping current with training requirements
It has been nearly two years since the training requirements
related to Community Residential Services Businesses (RCW 74.39A – formerly
known as 1163) went into effect on Jan. 1, 2016. These requirements include Supported
Living, Group Homes and Group Training Homes.
Effective July 1, 2017, the updated WAC 388-829, (which also includes all
developmental disabilities) contracted settings to include Children’s Licensed
Staff Residential, Alternative Living, and Companion Homes under the definition
of “Community Residential Service Businesses.”
This message provides you with an update on training requirements.

Question: How big should our classes be?
Answer: It depends on what you
are training. If you have denser
material such as Peer Coaching or 40 hour CORE, one trainer should cap their
classes at around 15 people. Trainers
can pair up and do classes of 20 people, but even that is challenging.
Things to consider:
- Experience of trainer(s)
- Room size
- Experience/knowledge base of attendees (new employees vs. experienced employees)
- Participation considerations (subject matter, resistant staff)
Question: What do you do when you or your co-trainer
are not on the same page or when there are challenges with co-training?
Answer:
-
Practice! With each other, in an empty room, or in front of neutral third party, and ask for feedback!
- Develop an agenda and follow it. Have set topics that each of you stick to and present on. Create a script so you can follow your co-trainers presentation.
- Discuss ahead of time your intent behind the materials and the point you are trying to make.
- Develop non-verbal signals to alert your co-trainer when they are getting off-topic or you need to call a break so the two of you can discuss issues away from the training class.
- Ask your co-trainer how they prefer to be re-directed when they are getting off-topic.
- Check in with each other often during breaks and while the class is engaged in activities.
