Referendum 74 blocks new law
The Civil Marriage and Domestic Partnership law (ESSB 6239) passed by the 2012 Legislature is on hold.
The Office of the Secretary of State announced this week that Referendum 74 passed the signature verification process, qualifying for a public vote on November 6, 2012. The law will remain on hold until the election results are certified on December 6, 2012.
Until then, WSPRS Plan 1 and Plan 2 and LEOFF Plan 2 are the only retirement systems that offer rights and benefits to domestic partners.
Approved in 2009, the “everything but marriage” law granting domestic partnership rights for all other retirement plans becomes effective on January 1, 2014.
