About safe deposit box auctions
Safe deposit box contents are turned over to the State of Washington 5 years after the owner stops paying rent. Once the items are inventoried, a claims notice is sent to the last known address that the bank had on file. If the items are not claimed by the owner, the State is required to sell the contents at a public auction within five years. Sale items usually include collectible coins, currency, jewelry, watches, stamps, silver bars, sports cards and other collectibles. Personal papers, photos, land, vehicles, or other tangible property are not sold at the auction.
