WAC 246-945-165 requires that an individual applying for a pharmacist license shall take and pass a pharmacy licensure examination and jurisprudence examination approved by the Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission (commission). Historically, the jurisprudence examination approved by the commission has been the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE). At the April 2, 2026 business meeting, the commission voted to accept the Uniform MPJE (UMPJE) starting 90 days from that date and allowing a 180-transition period where both the MPJE and UMPJE will be accepted. Below are the important dates to note:
-
June 9, 2026: Beginning June 9, 2026, Washington state pharmacist applicants can apply to take the UMPJE on or after July 2, 2026, and, if applicable, purchase a score transfer.
-
July 2, 2026: Beginning July 2, 2026, the commission will accept either a passing MPJE or a passing UMPJE score.
-
December 30, 2026: Beginning December 30, 2026, the commission will only accept a passing UMPJE score.
In addition, at the April 2, 2026 business meeting, the commission approved allowing those students who are beginning their Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) training to take the UMPJE prior to graduation from pharmacy school.
The commission recognizes there may be additional questions on the implementation of the UMPJE and plans to discuss the topic and provide further guidance at a future business meeting. The next scheduled business meeting is May 28, 2026. The agenda is forthcoming and will be sent through GovDelivery and posted online here.
