Today EPA released its final rule for several PFAS (per and polyfluoroalkyl substances). EPA developed the final rule in accordance with requirements under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). EPA evaluated the best available, peer-reviewed science, considered the feasibility of laboratory analysis and treatment, and considered costs and benefits. This rule establishes a Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL), which establishes a nationwide standard that utilities must reach to protect public health.
We were briefed at a high level of what is included in the rule, and we agree it will provide a superior level of protection and certainty for our public water systems. We are assessing the rule to understand the needs for staff implementation and impacts to all of you.
Fortunately, under the Washington State Board of Health rules for State Action Levels, sampling was required in Washington state prior to this new rule. These sampling results will help satisfy the initial monitoring requirements of this rule.
We will continue to share information as we review the specifics of the requirements and continue to support you with:
- Communications to your communities.
- Technical assistance and review of plans and designs for proposed PFAS solutions.
- Funding options and availability to assist in sampling, planning and treatment requirements to minimize fiscal impacts.
If you have questions regarding this, please continue to check our website PFAS | Washington State Department of Health as we will keep it updated. Please also closely review the linked EPA publications and resources.
