The Board of Optometry (board) filed WSR 23-16-043 on July 25, 2023, a CR-101, Preproposal for chapter 246-851 WAC. The board is considering amendments to implement Substitute Senate Bill (SSB) 5389 (chapter 400, laws of 2023) which expands the optometrist scope of practice to include certain advanced procedures and establishes requirements for a license endorsement.
The new law requires the board to adopt rules for education, training, and exams to implement a license endorsement allowing optometrist to perform the advanced procedures. The board will also examine rules establishing adverse reporting requirements regarding the advanced procedures performed under the license endorsement.
As part of the rulemaking process, Department of Health (DOH) welcomes your participation in a series of rulemaking workshops. During the workshops we welcome ideas, concerns, and general comments on how to best develop regulations pertaining to SSB5389. We will be notified through GovDelivery of these workshops as they are scheduled.
