Hello CHWs, Community Partners and Trusted Messengers,
Thank you all again for your ongoing efforts to support community through the COVID-19 pandemic. I am reaching out to you in partnership, to ask that you please help me to spread the word about an upcoming COVID-19 vaccine clinic for Community Health Workers (they may also identify as Promotores, Community Health Advocates, or trusted messengers) at the Washington State Department of Health Offices in Tumwater on Saturday, April 17th. The clinic will be providing vaccinations between 9 am to 3:15 pm, with slots reserved specifically for CHWs and their eligible family members (family members must be 18 or older to be eligible) between 9 and 11 am.
The Washington State Department of Health recognizes Community Health Workers are a critical part of the healthcare workforce and play an important role in supporting community members through the COVID-19 pandemic. Many community health workers are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine but may face barriers accessing the vaccine.
Please help us to spread the word about this vaccine clinic and get CHWs registered.
I have included a few key points about the vaccine clinic below, and with more details about the upcoming vaccine clinic below including general information, how to register, and day of vaccine clinic. This information is provided in English and Spanish. The document below includes an active link to register for the CHW vaccine clinic - please share it thoughtfully. Denise Smith, NACHW’s Executive Director, was recently interviewed by Johnson & Johnson Center for Health Worker Innovation:
Strengthening the Community Health Workforce Can Help Improve Healthcare Access for Communities of Color
CHWs play a key role in connecting communities with healthcare in a trusted and culturally competent way—they need to be fully recognized and integrated into health systems.
The Johnson & Johnson Our Race to Health Equity platform, a $100 million commitment over the next five years, aspires to take on the inequities rooted in systemic racism that threaten health in communities of color across the United States. A key component of the platform focuses on supporting the work of Community Health Workers (CHWs) by partnering with organizations such as the National Association of Community Health Workers (NACHW).
As members of the communities they serve, CHWs play a key role in connecting their communities with the healthcare system in a trusted and culturally competent way. Yet they are not fully recognized and integrated into health systems. I sat down with Denise Octavia Smith, MBA, CHW, PN, Executive Director of NACHW to discuss the urgency and importance of the work in this area.

This infographic shows how Community Health Workers (CHWs) promote health equity and improve public health. The CHW workforce is diverse, growing, and drawing attention to its ability to address determinants of poor health. As trusted advocates, educators and counselors embedded in their communities, CHWs facilitate culturally competent service delivery. Tapping into this workforce can strengthen the response to COVID-19 and address longstanding inequities.

Events of the last year have brought increased attention to the pain of health inequities impacting people of color in the United States. This conference is led by a grassroots group of health care providers in Whatcom and Skagit County who want to better serve the needs of all of our patients and our community as a whole.
Goals: 1. Examine the extent of racial health disparities in our own community, clinic settings and hospitals. 2. Understand the history and context of race relations in Whatcom and Skagit counties and how this may impact our relationships with patients. 3. Identify how implicit bias may influence interactions between patients, medical providers, and the healthcare team, and how this impacts care delivery. 4. Identify strategies to increase recruitment and retention of BIPOC health care team members. 5. Identify actionable steps to reduce health disparities and improve health equity within one’s own clinical practice and organization.
