Meet the Wenatchee High School AEM champions

We're excited to introduce sophomores from Wenatchee High School's Advanced Energy Management (AEM) internship program: Sloane Eppich Talbott, Isabella Garcia, Marisol Nava and Stephanie Salgado. This paid internship is a collaboration between Chelan County public utility district (PUD), JCPenney, Wenatchee School District, North Central Education Service District 171, and North Central Washington libraries that provide students with real-world hands-on experience as part of a professional energy management team.

The Wenatchee community workforce development program is being designed for replication across Washington state. For clients like JCPenney and their own school district, students monitor real-time electricity use and demand, benchmark performance with ENERGY STAR’s Portfolio Manager, identify energy waste, open energy work order tickets, and engage with building occupants to actively participate in energy savings solutions.

The AEM internship equips students with valuable skills in teamwork, data analytics, project management, troubleshooting, and client engagement, preparing them for their future careers in whatever path they choose, which hopefully includes energy efficiency and sustainability.

Tier 1 early adopter incentive funding is still available

Several buildings have completed energy saving building retrofits in this incentive program, but there is still $70 million to be allocated in the Tier 1 Early Adopter Incentive program. Applications for Tier 1 buildings that are over 220,000 square feet are due by June 1, 2025.

Early adopter incentives help make Clean Building Performance Standards (CBPS) compliance more affordable by reimbursing eligible building owners for meeting early compliance with the CBPS. Qualifying building owners could receive $2 per square foot, plus an additional 5 cents per kBTU saved beyond the program’s required 15-point reduction in energy use intensity (EUI).

To be eligible for the Tier 1 Early Adopter Incentive program, the building must:

  • Be larger than 50,000 square feet
  • Be served by a participating utility
  • Comply with the CBPS for Tier 1 buildings

Additional information including Incentive Program end dates for buildings smaller than 220,000 square feet can be found on the Clean Buildings Incentive website.

Please contact CBPSIncentives@commerce.wa.gov with questions.
