Prevention Webinar Series

Join us for episode three on Monday, December 9: Secondary Prevention

Greetings OHY grantees and partners,

Sending gratitude to those who gathered with us for the second part of our webinar series on youth homelessness prevention back in July, cohosted with our partners at the Department of Children, Youth & Families (DCYF) and the Health Care Authority (HCA). For folks who were unable to attend, you can access a recording of the webinar and the slides on our website.

What’s next?

We are pleased to announce that the next episode in our prevention webinar series officially has a date: December 9, from 9 to 11 a.m..

Please join us for a crash course on secondary prevention, the focus of which is to prevent deeper systems involvement and out of home placement. In this episode we will be uplifting four recommendations that fall along the early and later secondary stages of the prevention continuum—see infographic below—from the state’s strategic plan on youth homelessness prevention.

The webinar will consist of a series of interactive panel discussions, in addition to a presentation, with subject matter experts to shed light on these recommendations and the work underway to turn them into reality. The four parts of this episode will focus on the below topics.

  1. Improving the court process and access to services for families experiencing severe crises. We will discuss a current pilot program and a prior policy proposal, both of which are promising solutions to the barriers many families in crisis face when reaching out for help.
  2. The potential for family finding services, such as the Relative Search Unit within DCYF, to bolster diversion conversations in youth homelessness service provision.
  3. The fine lines of abuse, neglect, and abandonment, with a deep dive into the community versus statutory definitions of abandonment and how many youth are stuck on the margins of homelessness and child welfare involvement.
  4. A look through the lens of Executive Order 22-04 in dismantling racism within state agencies by means of implementing the Washington State Pro-Equity Anti-Racism (PEAR) Plan & Playbook.

Another webinar to come

Our final episode in this webinar series will hone in on universal and primary prevention efforts aimed at preventing systems involvement for youth and families.

We hope this webinar series will help audience members locate themselves and their work within the framework of Washington State’s strategy for youth homelessness prevention. There will be more opportunities to participate in the Youth Homelessness Prevention Workgroup and related subcommittees, relevant to your area of expertise and work, which will be formed throughout our implementation efforts.
