Kathleen Harvey

Kathleen Harvey was selected as the new permanent managing director for the Department of Commerce’s Office of Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention (OFSVP, or the Community Safety and Violence Prevention Unit). Kathleen, who uses she/her pronouns, has been with OFSVP for just over a year.

For almost three decades, Kathleen led community-based programs and services that addressed health-related social needs of youth, young adults, and families impacted by the juvenile criminal legal system across the state. Her work at Commerce in the past has focused on enhancing state and federal community safety and violence prevention grant portfolios through community coordination, public awareness campaigns, data collection and analysis, and making recommendations to the Legislature for future programming.

“Community violence intervention is an emerging body of work that continues to shape the community safety landscape of the state of Washington,” Kathleen said. “Through a lens of racial equity, social justice and healing-centered approaches, I am committed to prioritizing investments in historically underserved and unserved communities, strengthening community capacity through intentional outreach, and using data validated by our community partners to inform both short and long-term decisions. I look forward to the work ahead as we seek opportunities to support our communities at large.”

Under Kathleen’s leadership, OFSVP will continue its efforts to foster community partnerships and coordination and data integration and information sharing. OFSVP administers state and federal programs designed to interrupt the cycles of violence while embedding practices to restore health, wellness, and safety for individuals and communities.

Over the next two years, OFSVP plans to:

  • Expand partnerships within Commerce and externally through community violence intervention allyship
  • Advance grantee technical assistance through specialized workshops
  • Promote grantee cross-collaboration gatherings
  • Create a community safety and violence prevention strategic roadmap through evidence-informed best practices
  • Support enhanced data integration and research

Please email Kathleen with questions. The OFSVP team will continue to share updates and news.
