Prevention Strategy Update

Join us for a webinar Tuesday, April 9

Hello OHY grantees and partners,

We’re pleased to announce that efforts are underway to begin implementing the State’s Final Strategic Plan on Youth Homelessness Prevention, a revolutionary strategy spearheaded in 2021 by a steering committee of people with lived experience of homelessness.

Guiding implementation of this plan is the nascent Youth Homelessness Prevention Workgroup, established via a proviso in ESSB 5187, 2023, and co-led by the Office of Homeless Youth (OHY) and the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF). The workgroup will include additional key stakeholders, including other state agencies, community-based organizations and, most importantly, a steering committee comprised of people with lived experience of homelessness.

What's next?

To inaugurate the workgroup and keep you all informed on current statewide prevention efforts, OHY, DCYF and the Washington Health Care Authority (HCA) invite you to join us for the first part of an ongoing webinar series on our shared work around prevention.

The first webinar is on Tuesday, April 9, from 11 a.m. to 1p.m..

This introductory episode will include an overview of the prevention plan and steering committee that will help shepherd plan implementation.

Additional updates will be provided on other components of the scope of work the Prevention Workgroup is tasked with by the Legislature, including:

More webinars to come

Subsequent episodes in this webinar series will dive deep into the recommendations set forth in the prevention plan through the lens of each stage of the continuum of prevention services. These include:

  • universal and primary prevention efforts focused on preventing systems involvement for youth and families;
  • secondary prevention services geared towards preventing family separation and deeper systems involvement;  and
  • tertiary prevention programs meant to prevent or address homelessness and instability upon exits from systems of care.

We hope this webinar series will help audience members locate themselves and their work within the framework of Washington state’s strategy for youth homelessness prevention. There will be more opportunities to participate in the Youth Homelessness Prevention Workgroup and any subcommittees, relevant to your area of expertise and work, that will be formed throughout our implementation efforts.
